Learn To Roll Your R's In Russian (Pronunciation Guide)

Rolling your R’s is an essential skill for pronouncing Russian correctly.

Many English speakers aren’t used to making this sound at first.

You can train your tongue to make this vibration with a few targeted exercises.

The Russian R is known as an alveolar trill.

This simply means your tongue taps rapidly against the roof of your mouth just behind your teeth.

I’ll explain exactly where to place your tongue and how to push the air out to create this sound.

Understanding the Russian R

The English R and the Russian R are produced in completely different parts of the mouth.

When you say an English R, your tongue pulls backward and doesn’t touch the roof of your mouth.

The Russian R requires your tongue to move forward.

The tip of your tongue must lightly touch the ridge just behind your upper front teeth.

This area is called the alveolar ridge.

Where to place your tongue

Proper tongue placement is the foundation of the rolled R.

Say the English letter “D” or “T” and freeze your tongue in place.

Notice how the tip of your tongue rests on the bumpy skin just behind your upper teeth.

This exact spot is where the Russian R is born.

Keep your tongue relaxed rather than pressing it hard against this ridge.

If your tongue is too rigid, it won’t be able to vibrate.

How to use airflow for vibration

The rolling sound happens because air passes over a relaxed tongue tip.

You don’t use your jaw or throat muscles to create the trill.

Your vocal cords produce a continuous sound while a strong burst of air pushes past your tongue.

Because your tongue is resting lightly on the alveolar ridge, the air forces it to flap open and closed rapidly.

Take a deep breath and push the air out through your mouth with force.

Direct this air straight over the tip of your tongue.

Practice exercises for the rolled R

You need to build new muscle memory in your tongue to consistently roll your R’s.

The “Prince of Prussia” drill is a highly effective way to start.

Say the phrase “Prince of Prussia” but replace the R sound with a D sound.

It’ll sound like “Pdince of Pdussia”.

Saying this quickly forces your tongue to flick against the alveolar ridge.

Another great exercise is the “Butter” method.

Say the English word “butter” over and over at a fast pace.

In American English, the double T in “butter” is actually a quick flap of the tongue.

This flap is the exact same motion as a single Russian R.

Speed up the word “butter” until you can push a continuous breath of air through that tongue flap.

Russian vocabulary to practice

Once you can produce a trill, you must practice attaching it to Russian vowels and consonants.

Start with words that have the R at the beginning of the word.

This positioning is usually the easiest for beginners.

ротrotmouth
рыбаrybafish
рукаrukahand/arm

Next, practice words where the R is wedged between a consonant and a vowel.

This requires quicker tongue movement.

братbratbrother
правдаpravdatruth
приветprivethello

Practice these words out loud every day.

Here’s a common greeting you can try right now:

Привет

Privet
Hello

It can take a few weeks for this sound to develop.

Your tongue muscles just need time to adjust to this new airflow pattern.
