Here Are Some Great Russian Movies & Shows For Learners

As a language teacher and the founder of Talk In Russian, I always tell my students that textbooks are only half the battle. If you want to truly understand Russian, you need to hear how real people speak.

Watching movies and TV shows in your target language is one of the best ways to improve your listening skills. It helps you pick up natural phrasing, slang, and cultural jokes that you won’t find in a standard dictionary.

In second language acquisition, we call this “comprehensible input” - consuming content that is just slightly above your current level so your brain naturally absorbs the language.

Here is my guide to the best Russian movies and TV shows for learners, categorized by level.

Why watch movies and tv shows to learn Russian?

When you start to learn Russian, the pronunciation and speed of native speakers can feel overwhelming.

Russian is a highly expressive language. Natives change their word order for emphasis, use a lot of colorful idioms, and speak fast. Watching video content helps you bridge the gap between textbook Russian and real-world Russian.

Here is why you should add screen time to your study routine:

  • You get to hear natural pronunciation and intonation.
  • You learn how to use grammar in context.
  • You are exposed to Russian humor and culture.
  • It makes learning fun, which keeps you motivated!

The best Russian tv shows for learners

TV shows are excellent for language learners because the episodes are shorter than movies, and you get used to the characters’ specific voices over time.

Here are my top recommendations:

Masha and the Bear (Маша и Медведь)

This is a world-famous animated children’s show. Because it is made for kids, the language is incredibly simple, clear, and easy to follow. It is the perfect starting point if you are an absolute beginner. The visuals will help you guess what the words mean even if you don’t know them yet.

Kitchen (Кухня)

This is one of the most popular modern Russian sitcoms. It is a fast-paced, funny show about the staff of a high-end restaurant in Moscow. It is fantastic for intermediate learners who want to learn everyday vocabulary, modern slang, and how Russians joke with each other.

Better Than Us (Лучше, чем люди)

If you are an advanced learner who enjoys sci-fi, this is a must-watch. It was actually the first Russian series to be bought by Netflix as a Netflix Original. The plot revolves around androids in near-future Moscow. The dialogue is clear but uses more advanced vocabulary.

The best Russian movies for learners

Russian cinema has a rich history. Watching these movies will not only help your language skills but also give you something to talk about with any native Russian speaker.

Cheburashka (Чебурашка)

Cheburashka is a legendary Soviet cartoon character (a little animal with big ears). In 2023, a live-action family movie was released and became the highest-grossing Russian film ever. The language is family-friendly and relatively easy to understand.

The Irony of Fate (Ирония судьбы, или С лёгким паром!)

You simply cannot understand Russian culture without watching this movie. It is a romantic comedy from the 1970s that is broadcast on Russian TV every single New Year’s Eve. The speech is formal and very clear, making it great for intermediate learners.

Brother (Брат)

This is a gritty, iconic 1990s crime drama. I only recommend this for upper-intermediate to advanced learners because it is packed with street slang and fast, mumbled dialogue. However, it is full of legendary quotes that every Russian knows.

Here is one of the most famous quotes from the movie:

Listen to audio

Скажи мне, американец, в чём сила?

Skazhi mne, amerikanets, v chom sila?
Tell me, American, what is power in?
Listen to audio

Я думаю, что сила в правде.

Ya dumayu, chto sila v pravde.
I think that power is in truth.

How to learn Russian with movies and tv (SLA tips)

Just sitting on the couch and watching a movie won’t magically make you fluent. You have to watch actively.

Based on my background in language acquisition methodology, here is how you should watch:

Use Russian subtitles, not English.

If you read English subtitles, your brain will just read the English and ignore the Russian audio. Turn on the Russian subtitles. This connects the spoken sounds to the written words, which is highly effective for building your vocabulary.

Don’t pause every five seconds.

It is tempting to look up every single word you don’t know, but this will ruin the fun of the movie. Try to guess the meaning from the context. Only pause to look up a word if it is repeated constantly and you cannot understand the scene without it.

Rewatch your favorite scenes.

Repetition is the key to language learning. Find a 2-minute scene you really like and watch it three or four times. Try to repeat the lines out loud right after the actors say them. This technique is called “shadowing” and it works wonders for your accent!

Start small.

If a two-hour movie is too exhausting, start with a 20-minute sitcom episode or even short YouTube clips. Build your stamina over time.
